Windermere town lies close to, but not on the shores of Lake Windermere in the Lake district. The nearby town of Bowness-on-Windermere that effectively merges with Windermere itself does however border the lake with a ferry jetty to serve the lake cruises. There are many hotels in Windermere due to its popularity as one of the prime tourist destinations within the Lake District National Park. Some of the more impressive hotels are grand lake land buildings and are located on elevated positions overlooking the lake with fine views.
Windermere contains a good number of shops, restaurants, pubs and tea houses to eat out if you require a break from the hotels, alternatively, nearby Bowness-on-Windermere is within walking distance fir further options. From Bowness you can also take a lake cruise to Ambleside or Brockhole for the lake District visitors centre,.
