Lake District Hotels Map The Lake District is situated in the north west of England covering an area of approximately 885 square miles (2,292 km and 32 miles across (east to west towards the coast) and 40 mile north to South. It is regards as one of the most beautiful areas of the United Kingdom.  The Lake District National Park was created to protect this area in 1951 and  was one of the first to be created just after the Peak District National Park, and now part of a series of 10 parks throughout England.
The Scenery and open countryside draws visitors from around the world, with lakes and mountains, known locally as "Fells" in abundance. In fact this relatively small area lays claim to England Highest Mountain (Scafell Pike) and England's longest lake (Windermere) with 13 other main lakes in the area.
The main populated areas are Ambleside, Bowness-on-Windermere Keswick and Windermere itself all with a selection of shops, restaurants and a selection of Hotels and Bed and Breakfasts. Other smaller villages also popular are Coniston, Grassmere, Pooley Bridge and Hawkshead though many more areas could be mentioned.
The Geology of the area was mainly shaped during the last ice age of 13,000 years ago and the most notable  feature is the classic U shaped valleys that the movement of the ice sheets created as they move and gouge out the existing valley sides . At the same time the ice sheet pushes small rock material along with it and eventually deposited this as the ice sheet melted. deposit as the ice sheets melted  forming natural barriers within the valley's that trapped the waters to form the lakes.
