Llanberis Path to Snowdon – Route and Places to Stay

The Llanberis Path is the longest and most gradual route to the summit of Snowdon, making it one of the most accessible options for walkers tackling the mountain. The trail begins at the end of Victoria Road in Llanberis, right by the cattle grid, and follows a well-defined track that runs alongside the Snowdon Mountain Railway for much of the ascent.

Although considered the easiest route in terms of gradient, it is still a sustained climb with a steady uphill profile all the way to the summit. The full return journey is just over 9 miles, offering expansive views over Llyn Padarn and the surrounding mountains as you gain height.

Thanks to its clear path and manageable incline, the Llanberis Path is popular with a wide range of walkers, though it still requires good preparation, suitable footwear, and awareness of changing mountain weather conditions.

Elevation profile

The chart shows the route from start to finish. If a hotel has been selected, its nearest position on the route is shown as a highlighted marker.

The map and elevation graph show the full return route to Llanberis, which is why the profile includes both the ascent and the corresponding descent. The return follows the same Llanberis Path in reverse, mirroring the climb back down. There is also the option to vary your descent by joining alternative routes that intersect with the Llanberis Path. Notably, both the Pyg Track and the Miners’ Track are available as alternative return routes. These, however, are more rugged and demanding than the Llanberis Path, with steeper gradients and rougher terrain, so they require careful consideration, appropriate footwear, and good weather conditions. Some of these routes lead towards Pen-y-Pass, allowing you to finish your walk there and take a bus back to Llanberis, provided you plan your route in advance.

About the Terrain

Difficulty: 🟠 Moderate

While the route up Snowdon is one of the easiest, this is relative, it is also the longest and care still needs to be taken. The path has a constant incline, sometimes steep in parts and with a scramble over rocky sections. It is generally suitable for walkers, with restrictions for cyclists at certain times of the day and periods of the year.

The route shown is intended to give a general sense of how nearby accommodation is positioned in relation to the walk, helping you gauge proximity rather than providing a detailed navigation guide. While the map outlines the route, it should be viewed as an overview only and may not reflect every turn, feature, or on-the-ground condition you may encounter.

For the walk itself, it is advisable to use a reliable map and/or an electronic navigation aid to assist with route finding, particularly in areas where paths may be less distinct or conditions change. Taking time to plan ahead, check local information, and prepare for varying terrain and weather will help ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience.
