About Lyme Regis and the surrounding area
Lyme Regis, often referred to as "The Pearl of Dorset," is a historic seaside town on England's Jurassic Coast. It's particularly famed for its fossil-rich cliffs and beaches, which have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town is nestled in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is celebrated for its vibrant marine life, tranquil gardens, and the iconic Cobb, a harbour wall that provides stunning views of the coastline. Lyme Regis is also well-known as the setting for John Fowles' novel "The French Lieutenant's Woman" and its subsequent film adaptation.The town's location provides easy access to a number of nearby locations and attractions. Just to the east, you'll find the charming town of Charmouth, another excellent spot for fossil hunting. A bit further east, you encounter West Bay, a seaside location famous for its stunning cliffs and as the setting for the TV series "Broadchurch". To the west of Lyme Regis, you find the quaint towns of Seaton and Sidmouth, each offering its own unique coastal charm. Inland to the north, Axminster, known for its carpet industry and connections to TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, and the picturesque town of Chard are both worth a visit. All these locations are comfortably reachable for day trips, making Lyme Regis a perfect base for exploring the rich and varied offerings of the Jurassic Coast.
