Paul and Hilary combined both proximity to York with a private country setting when in 2017, Westergate House was bought, having admired this stunning property for many years We live on site in the rear of the property where the doctor's surgery once was. When not refurbishing Westergate House and looking after the acre of garden the fish and chickens, Paul competes in off road landrover events, and after a life time in the automotive industry Paul's hobby is restoring classic cars. Paul’s career as an engineer and garage owner and Hilary’s lifetime in hospitality and Cordon Bleu cook make a robust combination to offer a friendly and personal service with home cooking and well appointed facilities. Westergate House built in 1937 by a local landowner was named Flers House after one of the battles of the Somme, where a family member was lost in action. Since then it has seen many changes as it Grimston House, a respite home for disabled children in 1965, then Rutland House as Escrick doctors’ surgery. In 1986 re-named Grimston House became a B&B and in 2020 when substantially refurbished relaunched as Westergate. after an adjacent field. With an AA Four star gold and breakfast award this delightful small country house has seven en-suite rooms varying in size and a large garden which sets it back from the road, yet allowing you easy access into York by bus or car. The views from the front over the fields to the rising of the Yorkshire Wolds illustrate our ideally placed out of town, rural location to explore the city, as well as the coast and countryside of Yorkshire, or a central stop over for longer journeys traversing the UK. Westergate House is set back from the main road behind a horseshoe sweeping drive with plenty of parking so the accessibility for cars or larger vehicles and regular bus to York are perfect for a trip to York and beyond. There is a basic pub 2 minutes walk away, Escrick is a mile away so walkable on a nice evening where there is a Thai restaurant and gastro pub. In Riccall or skipwith both 4 miles away are Burro Italian restaurant or the award winning Drovers Arms pub - We will send links to these and more. You will find a spar shop and ATM at the Shell garage 1 mile away. You can visit Elvington Airfield and air museum within 15 minutes drive and McArthur Glen outlet 2 miles. York centre is 15 minutes by car or 20 minutes by bus, which runs every 15 minutes from 100 yds away. Escrick Park Estate has a cross country horse ride route and hosts many weddings and events in the park. Deighton lodge which hosts weddings is 1/2 mile away in land down an unmade road Queen Margaret's school is 1 mile away in Escrick and there is a golf course at Swallow Hall or Fishing ponds are 2 miles away and Naburn Grange Riding Centre 3 miles away. Sustrans cycle way to York and Selby can be reached in half a mile via a country road.
