Hotels in the North York Moors
The North York Moors National Park is situated in North East England and extends along the east coast from a point just north of Scarborough, northwards to Saltburn By Sea and approximately 35 miles west inland. The area of the park is approximately 550 square miles and was designated a national park in 1952 and was the 6th park to be open within a 19-month period.
The scenery and open countryside draw visitors from around the world, from the impressive cliffs on the east coast, intersected by the occasional beaches, and the wildlife that is also drawn to the cliffs, particularly birds that nest on the cliffside. Whitby on the coast is a popular tourist destination, and pretty fishing village, with the River Esk splits the town in two. The town is also famous for its ruined Gothic Whitby Abbey, which was said to be was Bram Stoker\'s inspiration to write Dracula, and to this day the abbey is frequented by fans of the books.
Inland, and as the name suggests the upland Moors are vast and are largest expanses of moorland in the UK, with the colours changing through the seasons. the moorlands are also broken up by a number of valleys , known as "Dales" in Yorkshire You will also find several tourist attractions such as the North York Moors Heritage Railway which runs through stunning countryside and famous towns / villages such as Goathland where the heritage railway has a station and which was the location for Hogsmeade railway station in the Harry Potter films and the location for the TV series "Heartbeat". Part of the area has also adopted the name of "Herriot Country" after the books of James Herriot, the Yorkshire Vet, and which draws tourists from around the world
