About Salisbury and the surrounding area
Salisbury is a historic cathedral city located in the county of Wiltshire, England. Established at the confluence of five rivers, the city is most renowned for Salisbury Cathedral, a stunning example of Early English architecture. The Cathedral is home to the best-preserved of the four original Magna Carta manuscripts, an iconic piece of British history, and boasts the tallest church spire in the United Kingdom. The Cathedral Close, which surrounds Salisbury Cathedral, is an oasis of tranquillity and is considered one of the most beautiful in England. It's home to a thriving market which operates twice a week, and its streets are lined with charming timber-framed houses, boutique shops, and a range of restaurants and cafes. Visitors can also explore the Salisbury Museum, which houses an impressive collection of artefacts from nearby Stonehenge and Old Sarum, the site of the earliest settlement of Salisbury. Speaking of Stonehenge, this world-famous prehistoric monument is just a short drive from Salisbury and is a must-visit for anyone in the area.
In terms of surrounding areas, the city is closely neighboured by the towns of Wilton, famous for its historic carpet industry, and Amesbury, which holds the title of the oldest continuous settlement in the UK. Further afield, the New Forest National Park to the south offers an expansive area for walking, cycling, and wildlife spotting, while the city of Bath, known for its Roman-built baths and Georgian architecture, lies to the west. Back towards Dorset, you can easily access the scenic hilltop town of Shaftesbury and the bustling market town of Blandford Forum.
